View larger Lab Toads (and their close relatives, frogs) are very important for the ecosystem. Both animals’ main diet consists of insects, many of which are pests to food crops, such as aphids or slugs. Wouldn’t it be great to attract them to your yard to keep an eye on your garden? Using the trowel, dig a slight depression the soil so that when you lay the pot on its side, it won’t roll around. (Fig. 2)3. Lay the pot on its side in the depression you dug. Fill the area around the pot with soil so that the pot will stay in place. Fig. 2: Dig a small area for the pot. DIG DEEPER! If you aren’t seeing frogs or toads in your neighborhood when there should be some around, there could be something wrong. Lawn chemicals, pollution, or acid rain could be some of the reasons. Both frogs and toads are amphibians, and are key indicators of a healthy environment. Why? Because they breathe and absorb water through their skin! If the environment is polluted, they ingest those pollutants, which can kill them or prevent them from reproducing. Healthy toads, Healthy environment.

Review

"This fun collection of DIY activities – or gardening 'experiments,' as the author calls them – ranges from building rain barrels and gardening tool boxes to making a desert terrarium or growing a tropical porch container. My kids were immediately drawn to the projects in this book; my daughter has big plans for the fairy garden, and my son wants to make a sprinkler. And we're all fans of the mini pizza garden that helps us grow our own tomatoes, peppers, onions, basil and oregano." - CoolMomPicks.com'beautifully presented, and the ideas are lovely'

I hesitate to give a less than stellar review, but as someone who scrutinizes reviews prior to making purchases, I'd like to be honest. This is a nice book. The design is better than most, the instructions and pictures are good. For someone who is new to gardening with children, there are some good ideas in a nice format. I see that many of the reviews are from grandparents or parents - if that is you, this might be a great choice! Here's where I am disappointed - I am an experienced environmental educator. I have developed nature and gardening programs for 15 years. I purchased this book because of the title and because it was described as "EXPERIMENTS." I was looking for gardening activities with a science component and hoping for some fresh ideas to incoporate into programming at my workplace. An experiment is a scientific procedure where you make a discovery or test a hypothesis. E.g. "Plant this and see what happens." The lessons included are not experiments, they are activities (e.g. make a rain gauge, decorate flower pots). Some of the activities are rather tired - e.g. planting a salsa garden is heavily recycled. If I had an opportuntiy to flip through this book in person prior to ordering, I not have purchased it. I plan to either return it or perhaps gift it to someone who is new to engaging children in the outdoors.

Well done book. Our Granddaughter age 7- loves it. Experiments easy to read and keep the interest in combining science. Each book in the series is well done and easy to understand. Just bought the Kitchen Lab for Kids for her birthday.

This book was for 6 to 8 year old girls. There parents were thrilled with it - the children are enjoying it very much. Lots of interesting projects which Children and Parents can do together

This is an awesome book with great activities.

LOVE this book! One of my favorite Gardening with kids books and we have quite a few :)

This is perfect with lots of colorful images. Can hardly wait to give to my granddaughter who is 5.This will help her transform her back yard to the garden of her dreams.

Great book and must for the homeschooling family with a garden

I borrowed this book from a friend and loved it so much I purchased one for myself!
