Karl Ove Knausgaard’s first novel, Out of the World, was the first ever debut novel to win the Norwegian Critics’ Prize and his second, A Time for Everything, was widely acclaimed. The My Struggle cycle of novels has been heralded as a masterpiece wherever it has appeared, and the first volume was awarded the prestigious Brage Prize. Anselm Kiefer (1945) is a German painter and sculptor. He studied with Joseph Beuys and Peter Dreher during the 1970s. His works incorporate materials such as straw, ash, clay, lead, and shellac. The poems of Paul Celan have played a role in developing Kiefer's themes of German history and the horror of the Holocaust, as have the spiritual concepts of Kabbalah.

I have been a follower and a fan of Karl Ove Knausgaard books since the very beginning of The Struggle which I loved specially Book 1. I was expecting the last one would be fantastic. To my surprise it seemed to me he had to finish this last book in a short deadline and had to do it no matter what. The best thing in the book is that helped me learn the art of attentive observation of nature and the most incredible objects I could imagine of.
Like the other 3 seasons in Knausgaard's 'quartet' of books written for his young daughter (not even born when he began writing this series!), this book contains his typical insights about life, one's experience of it, etc. By sharing so intimately about his own experiences, it somehow enriches our own lives, making us realize just how precious this life is, and to enjoy it as it comes. To be ever mindful of just how miraculous this gift is, in its very ordinariness. Highly recommend ALL of his works.
This book represents the natural progression and end to Knausgaard's season cycle. It is clear in this book he has mastered the craft of writing transcendant essays on the most mundane of things. Somehow finding a way to relate the nature of grass to poets and artists, along with countless other observations which could be made by no other writer.The illustrations by Anselm Kiefer make the book a beautiful object on its own.
'Summer' is the final volume of Knausgaard's Seasonal Quartet. These four seasonal books were written for the author's youngest daughter who when we reach 'Summer' is two and a half years old. It's his way of explaining the world and her family to her. After recently reading 'Spring' I was happy to receive this volume which is twice as long as the three previous volumes, and therein lies the problem I think. 'Spring' was a meditation on the natural world and his family dynamics. He has four children and a wife who apparently suffers from mental illness. In 'Spring' Knausgaard struggles with the responsibility of raising four young children and a writing career. In 'Summer' the description of family is of less importance and his essays about the natural world around him take precedence. It is written in three chapters, June, July and August. June and July contain a series of essays on the natural world and then a diary section. August only contains essays. He writes about lawn sprinklers, ice cubes, wasps and seagulls. While occasionally he can make the mundane magnificent as when he describes the beauty of a cherry tree, I soon tired of these essays. I longed to hear more about his family. His wife is virtually absent from these pages, reduced to a ghost. I suppose he is shielding her from view. His description of a bike ride with his eight year old son, or his trip to Buenos Aires with his son is touching, but there just isn't enough of this to hold this reader's attention
I received a copy of this book specifically to review it. That said, I try to be honest and transparent in all my reviews.The Scandinavian author, Karl Ove Knausgaard, has written many books. The last four each was titled by one of the seasons. This book, summer, is his last.Each season starts with some brief theme chapters titled with things like "bats," "birch trees," ... and, then proceeds with dated journal entries.You will either love this book or hate it.I'm not sure about this, but my guess is that there is a certain rhythm and meter to the book if read in the original mother tongue that is probably lost in the English translation. (I'm guessing this based on reading English and German novels and seeing how the translations conveyed the denotation while generally not getting the connotative nuances, or seeing Arabic versus English where in Arabic a whole piece might rhyme, but no rhymes come across in English.)The book also features avaunt garde watercolors by Anselm Kiefer that show things like miniature houses on giant stalks of wheat. The paintings do not appear to be connected with the book.The book is a bit dark and nihilistic . Here are a few examples.In the chapter called "Slugs" it ends with this sentence, "I pushed the handles of the scissors together, and as the blades sliced into the body I heard it [the slug] screaming low and shrill."In the chapter called "Wolf," it ends with, "... until a few weeks later when it was shot."You get the idea.Some people will love the artistry, and some people will hate the grandiose pomposity of it.I have not read previous works of his, but the reviewers that did felt this book compared unfavorably with other of his works.
