About the Author
Norman Calder, who died in 1998, was Senior Lecturer in Arabic at the University of Manchester, UK. His Studies in Early Muslim Jurisprudence and numerous articles have had a lasting impact on the study of Islamic law. Jawid Mojaddedi is Associate Professor of Religion at Rutgers University, USA. He received the Lois Roth Prize for translations of Rumi’s Masnavi and is author of The Biographical Tradition in Sufism (RoutledgeCurzon 2001). Andrew Rippin is Professor of Islamic History at the University of Victoria, Canada, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. This book contains selections from important sources of Islamic literature. There are selections from the Qur'an, the Life of Muhammad, the Hadith, and religious history. In addition there are sections on Qur'anic interpretation, theology and philosophy, law and ritual, and Sufism. My only criticism is that there are too many selections concerning zakat, the alms tax, one of the five pillars of Islam. In addition an excellent combination glossary/index is included.
Great read
The book came earlier then expected. The only thing I did not like is when it came in it was bent at the corner a little. But overall good.
