Review

“One of the most important documents to emerge from the war in Afghanistan.”—The Seattle Times “Powerful . . . a riveting account of a strategic battle that doesn’t glorify war or focus on heroic deeds . . . Make room on your military bookshelf for Lions of Kandahar.”—San Antonio Express-News “Bradley takes the reader into battle.”—Time“A raw and authentic war story about untamed Green Berets in action. Bradley and Maurer crush it! Mr. President, grab a copy—this is a sure-bet Special Forces exit strategy. Unleash more of these brave lions across Afghanistan and America will win this war.”—Dalton Fury, New York Times bestselling author of Kill Bin Laden: A Delta Force Commander’s Account of the Hunt for the World’s Most Wanted Man“A powerful and gripping account of a battle that helped shape the war in Afghanistan. But Lions of Kandahar is more than that. Major Rusty Bradley and Kevin Maurer give readers a stirring inside look at the day-to-day operations of a Special Forces team—and what it takes to defeat insurgents hell-bent on regaining control of Afghanistan. With crisp writing and page-turning action, Lions of Kandahar is one of the best books written about the conflict.”—Mitch Weiss, Pulitzer Prize–winning investigative journalist and co-author of the critically acclaimed Tiger Force: A True Story of Men and War“This is a riveting tale, told from the front lines of the secret war against the Taliban. Lions of Kandahar is the definitive account of a modern Special Forces mission—a must-read for anyone hoping to understand the harsh realities of the Afghan conflict.”—David Zucchino, Pulitzer-Prize-winning journalist and author of Thunder Run: The Armored Strike to Capture Baghdad“I have read this book three times and I am still chilled to the bone with every word. In Lions of Kandahar you will be riveted by the unabridged action of our real-life military heroes. It took a group of exceptional individuals to accomplish Operation Medusa. We as a nation can only pray we have half the guts and fortitude given selflessly every day on our behalf by the Army Special Forces.”—Marshall R. Teague, actor; U.S. Navy (ret.)“The war in Afghanistan is made for Special Forces, but very little has been written about these soldiers since the initial attack on Afghanistan in 2001. Bradley and Maurer do a great job of showing how these elite units fight and why they are so important to the battle against the Taliban. Lions of Kandahar is a gripping, moving, and well-told war story.”—Greg Jaffe, Washington Post reporter and co-author of The Fourth Star: Four Generals and the Epic Struggle for the Future of the United States Army

Lions of KandaharThe book was easy to read, and it took me about 2 days worth of intermittent reading to finish. This was comparable to Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell in terms of length and reading level/speed. This book is largely centered around Bradley's Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA) team taking Sperwan Ghar, which had a prominent volcano-like berm sticking up. I read some of the 1-star reviews here and agree with some of their comments, for instance the fact that this team heavily relied on air support, air resupply, and the crew-served weapons on their GMVs. Without the support of the A-10s, Apaches, Chinooks, F/A-18 Super Hornets, and Predator Drones, the outcome might have been very different. Aside from political commentary and discussion, which I will not include in my review, the book had a lot of detail. The author took his time to explain some of the acronyms, but the biggest complaint I have is the poor descriptions of the main characters and various teams. In the beginning, the author explained some of the personnel that was close to him like Bill, Dave, and Zack. But towards the middle and latter half of the book, new teams and members were briefly introduced.I was also intrigued with some of Bradley's comments regarding their equipment. He said they were not able to procure FBCB2, aka Blue Force Tracking, although at that time FBCB2 was widely used on HMMWV's in Iraq. His Ground Mobility Vehicle (GMV) is essentially a HMMWV, which at the time in Iraq, was equipped with a turbocharged 6.5L V8 that barely made 200 hp. The vehicles in Iraq also had new armor kits, that apparently did not make its way onto GMVs at the time. Bradley mentioned that his GMVs were modified by the mechanics to remove the speed limiters and had superchargers. I did some research and couldn't find any supercharged GMVs. In addition, the geared hubs on the GMV/HMMWV along with the payload weight, power/weight ratio, wouldn't have allowed much faster speeds anyhow. I am not sure, and with all due respect to the author and personnel involved in the book, but these details might have been introduced to show how much improvisation the ground crew had to do to achieve success. For instance, instead of having a nice shiny FBCB2 BFT setup, they made their own GPS tracking system, or modifying the 6.5 with a custom blower and removed speed limiter, just shows how mechanically inclined they were or how they loved NASCAR and racing. There's nothing wrong with this, but being a Special Forces ODA, they should have been able to interface with the supply system used by SOCOM and even Big Army to obtain the Up-armored HMMWVs and FBCB2 from Iraq. Then again, the supply system is its own bureaucracy, and they needed to run light by removing all of their armor. Bradley's description of the ANA Ford Rangers was spot on, they were definitely not designed for heavy-duty use and their soldiers lacked a lot of training. Some of the things Bradley said were definitely true. Issued equipment is generally ill-suited for specific tasks. The issued desert boots are acceptable in most conditions, like polishing seats at a desk job, or perhaps some light patrols. But the "leather that digs into your toes" raised some questions. I don't recall a piece of leather that did that, although many of them are required to have composite safety toes to protect your feet from being crushed by vehicle tires or objects. This is the part that constantly jabs into my toes especially when the feet swell. Bradley's use of COTS (commercial off the shelf) hiking boots is the right approach, because the Army's new MultiCam uniform issued specifically for Afghanistan includes hiking boots! Some of the COTS hiking boots that are used with the MultiCam uniform are also similar: low top with thicker soles so they are more durable in mountainous terrain and comfortable for all kinds of wet/cold conditions.Overall: 4/5 stars, very fast and easy to read, the book could have described some of the characters and teams more clearly so they weren't "suddenly" introduced in the latter half of the book.

I have just finished reading this book and it so affected me that I had to close it, start at the beginning and read it again. It wasn't confusing. It wasn't offending. It wasn't anything I can put my finger on. I just had this unshakeable feeling that I had to know their names, remember their actions and commit to my memory the deeds of these extraordinary men. I think you could this a book about war and that is obviously true. It is also a book that reveals the details of a transformative process that takes place in a free people when they witness an unspeakable tragedy done against them and done against their allies. The men is this book are not killers, they are not blood lusting thugs. These men were uniquely culled and selected to solve a very specific problem and these men endured. I am struggling enormously to convey how utterly decent the author is as well as the men who served with him. This story encompasses war, tragedy, violence but truly it reveals what makes American's uniquely American. None of these men felt special, none of them wanted attention, recognition or accolades. In fact I am sure if you asked these men what they did want the answer would have been short and simple. They would have stated unanimously, "We just want to do our jobs, a job that must be done and we want desperately that all of us would come home to family and loved ones when the job IS DONE!" Prepare yourself to read a book written by your next door neighbor that mowed his lawn when he was home, drove his kids to school and volunteered to guard the school crosswalk. Expect to be naturally shocked and awe inspired to learn that your neighbor frequently leaves the safety of his home, country and the love of his family because he feels compelled to answer the call to defend ALL OF OUR FREEDOMS against evil horrible vile creatures that I am ashamed to call men. Expect to feel the relief from combat humor of the tension that crept over you and caused you to sit and read this entire story in one setting. I think that the author of this book teaches more about what it means to be a man, friend, warrior and American than any history book or class ever could.I could keep going AND I WANT TO! But truly I need to stop so that you can get to this incredible story of life and humility, that you might then experience your own emotional response to what these men did and what men just like them, "Damn Few" continue to do. Please buy two copies of this book and give one to a veteran and tell him it's your way of honoring him, his generation and the uniquely American sacrifices he made to protect our INCREDIBLY AWESOME NATION!!!This is a terrifically good story, it's fast paced, you get to meet each player and you get to participate in a truly historical event. Just as he felt that Jude deserved our nations highest honor I feel that this book deserves MUCH, MUCH, MUCH MORE than a mere 5 stars. To the man, Rusty Bradley. All I can say is thank you!

Unbelievable what these brave US Special Forces achieved against 100's of taliban fighters. These were to be a blocking force. Instead the regained the initiative and took key high ground. They used a tactic that to this day still remains a key strategy, take and hold the high ground. Keep in mind their main mission is to train indigenous troops also. A small squad of roughly ten men along with 20 to 30 Afghanistan National Army soldiers saved a major mission from the brink of disaster. This book is now among my favorite modern military books. Highly recommend, you will feel a sense of awe, pride and inspiration after reading this!

I really enjoyed this book. It's an account of an intense Special Forces fight in Afghanistan. They got bad intel and wound up fighting and defeating a much larger Taliban force. There's no real padding, just what life was like for Special Forces before the fight, getting to their assigned site along with ambushes getting there and then their battle. It made me appreciate the difficulties of moving men and material in the sometimes rocky, desert terrain, sometimes wet and muddy and fighting at times in dense crops including huge marijuana fields. The book is well written. The editing is good. Considering the type of story it is, there is not a lot of profanity probably due to the author's deep Christian beliefs. The author does not puff himself up but gives credit to the members of his team and the officers above him. Bradley was a captain at the time. The is good coverage of the interactions with the Afghan army who was fighting along side with the Special Forces. In spite of the subject matter, it was to me a very positive book.
