This is a wonderful textbook for an introductory course in public health, because it does a great job of utilizing past public health events in making a point. I like the ways in which epidemiology and the biomedical section of public health was explained, in a way which does not rely on statistics and not an overdose of epidemiological principles and what not. I love this textbook because it is arranged in a way with summary summarizing the past chapter pretty closely to the sections detailed more in depth from the chapter. This a great textbook for students embarking on a public health course, this is the best introduction, hopefully one to spur or ignite passion in the field. I also like the fact that this textbook is current, in other fields older textbooks are used with less accurate data and or statistics, however in the field of public health this is not the case since the author used several recent as well as past public health events and associated information. The language is very easy to understand, sometimes the language used is not such making the text harder to read, such is not the case with this textbook. This textbook could have been better if there were fill in the blanks after each chapter to reiterate that the reader has fully grasped the concept or concepts in detail. As I have mentioned this is a great introductory text and is worth your while.

Sections of book include seven parts and 31 chapters. The sections are:I. What is public health?II. Analytical Methods of Public HealthIII. Biomedical Basis of Public HealthIV. Social and Behavioral Factors in HealthV. Environmental Issues in Public HealthVI. Medical Care and Public HealthVII. The Future of Public HealthI bought this book for a class I'm taking called Introduction to Public Health, but if you are interested in public health and not taking a class, it is very informative and interesting just for your own knowledge or if you work in the public health sector.
Course Required text. It was a good introductory textbook that covers the comprehensive field of Public Health. There were times when the book felt as though it veered in to the political. Or, that the citations were a little less than scientific (citing major newspapers does not feel grounded in science). I felt that the highlighted words were fairly random. I am used to words being placed in bold font or highlighted in some other way when they were important terms or concepts. It didn't always feel that the author was intentional about their choice in which words to highlight. Overall, for an introductory text, it was a good and easy read.
I took Introduction to Public Health where this book was a requirement. It is well written, and most importantly is a simple read with plenty of important information that is presented in a structured and interesting manner. This is a book anyone could pick up off the shelves in a library or a book store and read without looking into a dictionary. It is actual and timely reflecting important information about the current status of public health.
I can only give the book 3 stars because it is a very expensive book for its size. The book is very small and not worth the price. After reading some of the chapters I feel as if the book does not explain the concepts very well. My other text books explain the topics better and they are not even specializing in what this book is supposed to be specialized in. If I didn’t need it for a class I would not have bought it.Update: I found a weird sticker in the book on page 376. The sticker is a copper color with spirals. I have no clue what it is for.
Interesting book. This book is what got me started in a career in public health and I surprisingly found out that I really like it.
This is a very informative book with in depth chapters regarding a variety of public health issues and disease prevention. My only critique about the book is that it would be easier to follow in an academic setting if the chapters were set up in more of a bullet pointed style, instead of essay format. Some of the material gets lost in the shear size of each paragraph, which requires quite a bit of note taking and highlighting. The material itself is very informative and relative to public health today.
